Checking For Understanding

Checking for understanding is an important step in the teaching and learning process because it completes the circle of assessment, planning and instruction by providing teachers and our students with evidence of learning. In addition, it supports our educational focus on differentiated instruction, instructional design and alignment to performance standards. By incorporating specific techniques such as using oral language, questioning, projects and using writing to check for understanding we have a strategic approach to the questions:
· “How do I know what they know/understand?
· What evidence will /I accept for this understanding?
· How will I use this information to plan for future instruction?
